Most of us are familiar with the concept of your personal brand – the process of marketing yourself and your career as your brand, but doing so separate from the company you work for. Meaning, you are more than your specific profession and can brand yourself as such. From a marketing and selling perspective, this allows you to build relationships with your network and even prospects and connect on a level that makes your customers feel important. From a personal perspective, this is simply the process of establishing yourself in your network and sticking to your brand. We’d like to share a bit of insight into building your personal brand and how to elevate it with storytelling.
Building Your Personal Brand
Building a brand is tough, building a personal brand doesn’t have to be. Leveraging storytelling can bring cohesion and consistency to this process and ultimately elevate your personal brand. Here’s a good starting checklist to ask yourself and map out what you want your personal brand to say – then we add the storytelling component:
Who are you?
- What are your core values and beliefs?
- What is your vision?
What do you want to be known for?
- What are your passions?
- What does your greatest achievement look like?
Who do you want to appeal to?
- Not everyone is your client
- You stand for something, who will care?
How To Add Storytelling To Your Personal Brand
Storytelling is part of our everyday, so adding it to your personal brand is only natural. Take your audience on a journey with you by following a few best practices:
Tell true stories – Honesty is not an option, it’s policy. Be creative, but consistent – and do not stretch the truth.
Show off your personality – This is not an advertisement or marketing ploy so it is important to be YOU. Being boring or salesy won’t maintain your audience either.
Leverage relatable characters and content – You want your audience to be able to connect on a personal level, highlight the different personas in your stories for more relatability.
Go with the flow – Ensure there is a flow and that your content is easy to follow.
Engage your audience – Provide captivating content and keep your viewers engaged. Try to provide your viewers with multiple platforms to consume your content: social media is wonderful for this.
